A RADical show for an irradiated wasteland.

Mission; TexasI’m going to say it; I believe that the video game adaptation curse has been lifted. This can be seen in films such as “Detective Pikachu” and “Sonic the Hedgehog” and the  TV show “The Last of Us.” Now a new TV show based on a video game has entered the ring, based on the popular post-nuclear role-playing game, Fallout.

As a game series, Fallout has always been wacky and zany, with atmospheric settings of sobering horror to remind you that a wasteland is a dangerous place. Through many games made after 2008’s Fallout 3, such as Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, and the extremely polarizing Fallout 76, the series has now begun its first foray into the small screen courtesy of Prime Video and Johnathan Nolan.

Our story begins in Vault 33, one of the many vaults built by the Vault-Tec corporation to house people from nuclear annihilation. After over 200 years since the bombs dropped, a young plucky and naïve girl named Lucy (Ella Purnell), must leave the safety of Vault 33 to find her missing father. This soon leads her into a crossroads with The Ghoul (Walton Goggins), and Squire Maximus (Aaron Moten) from the Brotherhood of Steel, which will change the face of the wasteland forever.

The show is incredible as it gets the humor, tragedy, gore, and little details that make Fallout, Fallout. Each character is perfectly played as their actor understood the assignment and knows how to take this new world with the seriousness and levity it entails. Dark humor is heavily worn on its sleeve as the show is goofy yet dangerous.

In the words of Maximus, “Everybody wants to save the world, but no one can decide how,” this is the central conflict of the show, as many factions are vying for control. The only difference is how we are not in control of the character this time to make the choices. This show is amazing and I cannot wait for more to get my fill.

5 thumbs up out of 5.
