The cost of living is a reality that emphasizes the need to earn a sufficient income. However, the pursuit to reach financial goals often comes at a cost — an imbalance between work and personal life. While it is necessary to earn enough money to support oneself, achieving work-life balance is also important for nurturing a fulfilling work culture. As a matter of fact, many Gen Z workers are advocating for work-life balance.

A great deal of people find themselves working long hours or taking on multiple jobs in order to make ends meet. Engaging in such practices suggests a lack of work-life balance, which can pose such mental health risks as burnout and stress. Maintaining work-life balance requires us to stay true to our values by prioritizing our time, setting boundaries and finding a balance that works with our lifestyles. With the right approach, we can gear towards work-life balance.

According to survey results, Gen Z is less likely to fall in line with the status quo and bend to workplace norms. Instead, they bring a new generation of workers actively opposing unhealthy work environments characterized by long workdays, demanding supervisors or a blurred boundary between work and personal life.

“Young workers are not lazy, entitled or keen on slacking off — they’re simply choosing to reject some of the practices that previous generations were forced to accept,” stated Business Insider.

Gen Z shared their warning signs when job hunting to determine how potential employers value work-life balance. Some signs that an organization might not prioritize work-life balance include job postings that emphasize the need for “highly dedicated” employees, workplaces with small teams that carry a heavy workload and employers who encourage staff to “put in extra work.”

They are advocating for positive change in the workforce, earning them the title, “America’s Most Pro-Union Generation.” By challenging traditional workplace structures as well as promoting equity and inclusion, Gen Z workers are shaping the future of work while creating a more positive workplace environment for all employees.
