As the holiday season unfolds, it’s easy to get swept up in the anticipation of festive activities. However, for many, loneliness can be a persistent companion. In an effort to  embrace the season with resilience and connection, let’s explore some strategies inspired by the heartwarming collaboration between Sammie Vance and POLYWOOD.

In 2017, 3rd grader Vance initiated an eco-friendly “Buddy Bench” to combat loneliness in schools. Fast forward, and Vance is now a budding entrepreneur inspiring collaboration with POLYWOOD.

Recognized for transforming recycled plastic into durable outdoor furniture, POLYWOOD has embraced Sammie’s cause. The collaboration aims to distribute Buddy Benches nationwide, amplifying inclusivity, environmentalism, and youth entrepreneurship. The examples below are inspired by budding benches and encapsulate the essence of connection to nature and sustainability.

Bonding Reimagined: Dive into the digital realm with virtual coffee catch-ups, whipping up festive recipes together on video, or immersing in a shared online game night. Technology, when wielded creatively, can be a powerful tool for connection.

Acts of Kindness: Volunteer in your community, such as neighborhood cleanups or working at the local soup kitchen. It’s a win-win for your well-being and others.

Virtual Communities: Dive into online forums or events tailored to your passions. Whether it’s a niche interest or a broader cause, connecting with like-minded individuals can cultivate a sense of belonging.

Self-Care, Nature Style: Shift the focus of self-care outdoors. Take contemplative walks, brisk runs, invigorating hikes, or calming bike rides. Nature, with its therapeutic vibes, becomes your canvas for relaxation and introspection.

Local Experiences: Support local events and small businesses. Explore your nearest farmers market, holiday festival, or coffee shop.

Artistic Expression with a Green Touch: Utilize creative outlets like journaling, painting, or sustainable art projects to process and express emotions, aligning with the eco-friendly ethos of the Buddy Bench initiative.

Mental Wellness as a Priority: If loneliness becomes overwhelming, recognize the importance of mental well-being and seek support from a professional. Many therapists now offer virtual sessions, providing easy accessibility.

As we navigate the holidays, let’s not only seek connection through personal strategies but also extend our support to initiatives fostering a compassionate and sustainable world. In these actions, we discover a profound truth — just like the Buddy Bench, our efforts can radiate warmth and inclusivity during the holidays and beyond. Vance’s vision echoes in our choices, inspiring positive change and fostering an environment where even the smallest gestures become powerful expressions of empathy and connection.
