Alena Analeigh Wicker has become the youngest Black person to be accepted into medical school.

The 13-year-old teen posted her acceptance letter from the University of Alabama at Birmingham on Instagram, according to WGN News, and thanked her mother for allowing her the “space to grow and become, make mistakes without making me feel bad.”

She graduated from high school at 12 and was selected for a UAB program that provides early acceptance to students who meet certain requirements. She’s completed more than half of her undergrad requirements at Arizona State University and Oakwood University.

Her teachers and her mom have been sources of inspiration to further her studies and her dreams.

“(My mother) inspired me to reach my goals and do whatever came to my mind. She never told me no,” said Wicker. “She was telling me throughout my journey, it doesn’t matter how young you are or what you want to be, you can reach it and go after your goals.”
