19 Y.O. Founder Creates Product to Combat Police Brutality

Plainfield, NJGen Z is no stranger to activism and using creative ways to reform the world. One of their biggest fights is against police brutality involving African Americans. Black Americans will continue to have dangerous encounters with police at alarmingly higher rates than white Americans. To solve this issue, 19-year-old founder, David Price, created the Safety Pouch

David Price, Creator of The Safety Pouch

The Safety Pouch is a tool that stores all important information needed for police officers during traffic stops into one central location. During a stop, the driver will use the pouch's built-in clip to attach to their window. Officers then unclip The Safety Pouch, go back to their cop car, and scan the driver's information.

Limited interaction between the motorist and officer is required. "The overall goal is to help prevent police brutality during traffic stops by making the interaction more hands-free and convenient for both parties," Price stated. There have been fatal traffic stops because of motorist movement while reaching for required documentation. This pouch limits motorist movement and police becoming suspicious.

According to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Black Americans are 3.23 times more likely than white Americans to be killed by police. This fact justifies Black Americans' fear of police interaction. Although there is a movement to defund the police so that interactions are limited, the movement's progress has been slow.

Approximately 8,200 pouches have been sold and many lives have been impacted. A success story Price shared included a hearing-impaired woman who usually gets into negative interactions with the police. She has also had guns pulled out on her. After purchasing The Safety Pouch, she stored her medical information proving she was hard of hearing in the front part of the pouch. She now credits smoother traffic stops to the tool.

Black Lives Matter flooded our airwaves after the killing of George Floyd. Primarily involving Gen Z, the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag averaged 3.7 million tweets per day according to Pew Research. This product was highlighted as an innovative solution to the crisis. The Safety Pouch is becoming popular with celebrities such as Bella and GiGi Hadid, along with Tina Lawson, endorsing the product. Click here to see the review from Master P.

As Gen Zers continue to get older and wiser, more solutions to combat society's issues are on the rise. For now, we thank Price and other activists for their efforts against the fight already.
