Barbie is celebrating National Women’s Month this March with a new collection of “role model” Barbies that resemble real-life women around the world who are role model figures to young (and older) girls everywhere.
There are eight women from eight different countries represented in the dolls. The dolls include: American “Triple Crown” (Grammy, Oscar, and Tony winner) actress Viola Davis, Canadian singer-songwriter Shania Twain, United Kingdom’s actress Dame Helen Mirren, Australian pop star Kylie Minogue, Indigenous Brazilian influencer Maira Gomez, Mexican film producer, director, and writer Lila Avilés, Japanese model and TV personality Nicole Fujita, and German comedian and political activist Enissa Amani.
These influential women were chosen because of how they “embody the brand’s mission to inspire stories to shape the future,” said Krista Berger, the senior vice president of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls.
The dolls were debuted for National Women’s Day, March 8th, which also happened to fall right before Barbie’s 65th anniversary on March 9th.
“For the past 65 years, Barbie has used her global platform to empower girls to dream big, explore their limitless potential, and direct their own narrative to shape their future,” Berger told USA Today. “As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we recognize over six decades of stories Barbie has helped write and the doll that continues to give everyone the opportunity to dream – and dream big.”
