Chicago — Former athletes are aiming to help students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) learn about personal finance through a virtual series where they’ll learn about ways to build generational wealth.
“ELEVATE! Creating and Preserving Black Wealth'' aims to change the face of the financial services industry by bringing greater diversity of those working in the field in addition to maintaining a talent pipeline.
These events aim to provide HBCU students with the tools to become more proficient in managing money. They will be taught how to develop smart money managing habits and skills to prepare them for post college life.
The series, which came out of a partnership between UBS, a global finance firm, and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), will include sessions led by former NFL player Adewale Ogunleye, former NBA player Allan Houston and SIAC Commissioner Greg Moore.
Ogunleye learned how to manage his NFL millions, which led him to a career in finance. He is now the head of sports and entertainment at UBS.
Moore’s involvement in the partnership came from the belief that income inequality is a threat to future generations.
“Some of our HBCUs are located in some of the most economically underserved, disconnected communities in the country,” said Moore.
“When you can share these stories and let the students know, and can give them the right information, access and opportunity, they can really create a lot more than we can imagine," said Houston.
