In recent months, the internet has seen an abundance of artificial intelligence softwares. Some exist for entertainment purposes, like ElevenLabs and Voice.ai. Others exist as a form of educational tools, like ChatGPT. In a time where most young people are working multiple jobs and going to school at the same time, it’s things like AI that are making it bearable to balance life.

AI softwares available to the general public are easy to access and affordable. This makes life better for those who are possibly struggling with assignments that require intense use of peer reviewed studies and citations. The databases of certain softwares allow for people to simply give their AI chatbots a prompt and a detailed response will come as a result. The virtual assistant will not only provide accurate and correct information, but it will be completely original thoughts (meaning no plagiarism).

Of course, many questions arise regarding work ethic and those who utilize artificial intelligence. It is still incredibly difficult to detect patterns within AI-generated content. That being said, there are efforts made to circumvent the abundant use of such generators, including softwares like Turnitin. According to The Tab, there are AI detectors in the softwares used by universities to check for plagiarism within written essays.

While it is clearly a form of shortcutting for students, it begs the question: How long until AI-generated information becomes the norm?

Since most services utilizing artificial intelligence are new, it’s easy for institutions to be against using them. There isn’t enough proof that using AI for school is beneficial to the learning experience. Forbes has provided a perspective that AI learning is a good thing. Ideas such as personalized learning and access to valuable information 24/7 were mentioned.

One thing is clear: the future is here. It was talk of a faraway future that included the concept of learning from machines. College level essays can be formed in minutes because of advanced AI technology. People can even create deep fakes of their favorite celebrities through voice AI softwares.

While there are dangers surrounding the use of AI, there are also tremendous benefits to its existence. It can add to learning experiences and overall quality of life, things that Gen Z really need.
