CharlotteImagine you just graduated and landed your dream job working at Meta and you have recently been notified that you will be laid off. This is a reality for many Gen Z in the tech industry.

Recent major tech layoffs have sent shockwaves through the industry and Gen Z is feeling it.

When deciding which industry to break out to, the tech industry looks great on paper, but after recent major layoffs you might need to rethink your field to get into. In the year 2022 there were nearly 4 million tech based roles in the US, according to Zippia, but in 2023 alone there will have been over 185,000 tech layoffs just in the first four months of the year. Tech companies like Amazon, Twitter, Facebook parent company Meta, Microsoft, Google, IBM, SAP, are some of the main culprits for these layoffs.

The work force evolved over the Pandemic. Many tech companies moved to hybrid and remote roles along with an added surplus of roles to support their employees. Gen Z was one of the biggest profits off of this system, and now that the economy is starting to become normal again so are jobs in the tech field.

So, what do these layoffs mean for the tech industry as a whole? On one hand, they could be seen as a sign of a slowdown in the industry, with companies tightening their belts in the face of economic uncertainty. On the other hand, they could be seen as a necessary step in the evolution of the tech industry, as companies adapt to changing market conditions and focus their resources on the most promising technologies such as AI.

How will the tech industry evolve in the future? The tech industry is constantly evolving, and companies that fail to adapt risk being left behind. Whether through layoffs or other means, companies must be agile and flexible if they want to succeed in today's fast-paced and highly competitive market.

If you are at a company and know that they will start to do layoffs soon it’s important to prepare. Start applying to different jobs right away and touch up on your resume and interviewing skills. Have conversations with your manager to get about what might happen and if you are a layoff candidate. It’s important also to have technical skills and different types of experience for your resume. This will give you the advantage when it’s time to make cuts and layoffs.
