For the past decade, Gen Z has established a variety of fashion trends, influencing different generations of people to follow along. From streetwear to mermaidcore, Gen Z presented new trends throughout the past decade that consequently meant the cancellation of former trends, deeming them as no longer cool to make way in current fashion senses. The latest Gen Z trend is an official dictation that ankle socks are no longer cool, while crew socks are.

“If you’re a millennial and love wearing ankle or secret socks, you might want to move along because if you’re a fashionista, the latest sock trend will leave you feeling old.” wrote journalist Gerry Cupido from IOL Lifestyle.

Gen Z’s latest trend poses as an identifier between generations, particularly Gen Z and Millenials. In public settings, such as the gym, the type of socks an individual wears seems to determine the age group. As a result, Millennials have quickly hopped on the trend to replace their ankle socks with crew socks in order to stay in line with cool and stylish trends.

Ironically, what is considered to be cool and stylish today was not the case many years ago when Millennials were the fashion trendsetters. Once upon a time, ankle socks were cool while crew socks were not. Although members of Gen Z are the current fashion trendsetters, some trends are consistent with previous ones, such as “Y2K” looks. Thus reflecting the interactions among different generations to facilitate current trends and consider what other trends can be flipped in the future.

While some choose to hop on the crew sock trend, others feel a strong passion for their personal sock preferences, whether that is ankle, crew, no-show, knee-high, colorful, neutral, matched or mix-matched. In all, socks serve their righteous purpose in our fashion and comfort preferences.
