As more people are getting vaccinated, many extended families are finally reuniting after over a year of being separated. But for me, I’ll have to wait.

My grandparents are a huge inspiration to me, and we're really close. I talk to them pretty much every week on WhatsApp. But because my extended family primarily resides in India, I haven’t been able to see them in a long time.

My grandparents have accomplished a lot in their lives. I grew up wanting to be just like them.

In high school, before every critical test, they would call me at 10 p.m. their time to wish me good luck. It was these calls that made me feel more confident that I could do my best.

Both pairs of my grandparents were supposed to visit this summer to celebrate my high school graduation. I was eager to thank them for all they have done to motivate me in high school. But obviously, that couldn’t happen.

Although I have to say thank you in unconventional ways, I’m really thankful I get to express my appreciation.
