A student was taken into custody Tuesday for a shooting that left four dead and eight injured at a high school in Michigan.
Four students — Tate Myre, 16, Hana St. Juliana, 14, Madisyn Baldwin, 17, and Justin Shilling, 17 — were fatally shot and eight people were injured, including a teacher, at Oxford High School, authorities said. The injured are being treated at three hospitals.
The 15-year old sophomore, Ethan Crumbley, was taken into custody five minutes after 911 calls were received at 12:51 p.m., Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McGabe told ABC News. He's been charged as an adult with four counts of first-degree murder, one count of terrorism causing death, seven counts of assault with intent to murder, and 12 counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
McGabe said a semi-automatic 9mm Sig Sauer handgun was recovered from Crumbley and he is believed to have acted alone.
“He invoked his right to not speak. … The whole thing lasted five minutes,” said McGabe, adding he didn’t know if the students were targeted.
When asked by reporters if they knew how the teen got a gun in the school, McGabe said he wasn’t going to divulge that information.
Tim Throne, Oxford Community Schools Superintendent, said the incident was “devastating” and confirmed the school didn’t have metal detectors.
“Pray for our families in Oxford, and our students,” said Throne.
The shooting was “horrific,” said Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
“My heart is with the parents who had their children taken from them today and the entire community in Oakland,” Whitmer tweeted.
"As Michiganders, we have a responsibility to do everything we can to protect each other from gun violence," she said. "No one should be afraid to go to school, work, a house of worship, or even their own home. Gun violence is a public health crisis that claims lives every day. We have the tools to reduce gun violence in Michigan. This is a time for us to come together and help our children feel safe at school."
Oxford is about 30 miles from Detroit.
