President Joe Biden will nominate federal appeals court Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court on Friday, he posted on Instagram.

The nomination will make her the first African American woman selected to serve on the high court, and the third Black judge in history. Justice Clarence Thomas currently sits on the court.

“Currently serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, she is one of our nation’s brightest legal minds and will be an exceptional Justice,” Biden posted on Instagram.

Brown Jackson would fill the seat being vacated by retiring Justice Stephen Breyer. The nomination must be confirmed by the Senate.
