Transferring from a PWI to an HBCU? These Tips Are For You (YR Staff)

You're making the switch to an HBCU (Historically Black College or University), congratulations! As a PWI (Predominantly White Institution) to HBCU grad myself, these tips below will help the process go smoothly.

Do Your Research

Every school has different programs for your major, pick your college based on your career goals, not based on the institution.

Get All Your Documents Together to Make the Process Easy

Get your transcripts, letter of recommendations, transcript and essay complete. The sooner you get these, you can submit these all together.

Transcripts/Credits

Make sure your transcripts are available to send over to the college or university you are interested in transferring to. The most important thing is making sure the credits you took at one institution are transferable to the school you are trying to go to, if not you will lose credits and push you back. During my transfer process, I lost 10 credits which pushed me back to being a freshman. Make sure you contact the school’s registrar's office.

Utilize Social Media Platforms

Make and meet friends who are already on campus so when you finally get on campus, you know a few people and won’t be a lone wolf.
