Oakland’s very own Kehlani has released a stunning visual to accompany her latest single, “Altar,” from her upcoming third studio album “Blue Water Road.”
The record serves as her first solo single since her 2020 release, “It Was All Good Until It Wasn’t.” The release of “Alter” comes a day after the R&B singer-songwriter dropped a trailer for the album and the message of a winter release date.
The Pop Wansel-produced track highlights the growth in Kehlani’s art since her debut. In the years since her rise to fame, she’s overcome personal hardships and welcomed motherhood into her life, themes that could be present in the forthcoming project.
Directed by Kid Studio, the music video picks up where the trailer left off. An injured Kehlani makes her way home and culminates in an interpretive dance sequence that radiates love and healing. “Understanding grief and death has been a journey,” Kehlani says in a letter posted to Instagram regarding the track. Lyrically, the song touches on themes of grief and healing, building on the idea of an altar to pay tribute to loved ones lost and how this brings them closer to her.
