In celebration of 80 years of Captain America, Marvel Comics is introducing the first ever gay character taking on the role.

Aaron Fischer will make his debut in a limited series, “The United States of Captain America,” where the audience will “see Steve Rogers teaming up with Captain Americas of the past — Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson and John Walker — on a road trip across the nation to find his stolen shield,” according to the press release

“Aaron is inspired by heroes of the queer community: activists, leaders and everyday folks pushing for a better life,” said writer Joshua Trujillo. “He stands for the oppressed and the forgotten. I hope his debut story resonates with readers and helps inspire the next generation of heroes.”

As “The Captain America of the Railways,” Fischer protects homeless youth and runaways.

The first installment of the series will be on sale starting June 2, coinciding with Pride Month. Future releases will feature different versions of the character, each with a unique background.

“We’re hoping to explore what the idea of Captain America means at this precise moment — not just on the grand stage of the world — but to everyday and often overlooked communities throughout the United States,” said series writer Christopher Cantwell.
